Turkish Petroleum Corporation was established as the National Oil Company (NOC) in 1954 by Law No. 6327 to engage in hydrocarbon exploration, drilling, production, refining and marketing activities on behalf of the state.
As an Integrated oil company, it was engaged in all the activity fields of the oil industry from exploration to production, refinery, marketing and transportation until 1983. Today, Turkish Petroleum is merely an upstream (exploration, drilling, well completion and production) company.
Being an important actor of the national economy, Turkish Petroleum achieved many “firsts” of the Turkish oil industry in the past. The Company, its history reaching back over a half century, had given rise to seventeen major companies, including PETKİM, TÜPRAŞ and POAŞ to Turkey.
In 2017 Turkey consumed 30.723 thousand tons of crude oil and 53.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas hence 91.7% of crude oil and 99,4% of natural gas consumption was imported from several countries. TPAO’s one of the most important objective is to be able to fulfill the oil and natural gas need from domestic and foreign resources.
With the registered capital of 5.2 Billion Turkish Lira, Turkish Petroleum has 3.700 employees in average. Its head office is in Ankara.
