In 1994, international oil companies have established a consortium in order to operate Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli site which is 120 km away from Baku, Azerbaijan. TPAO holds 5,73% share via Joint Development And Productıon Sharing Agreement (JDPSA), effective since December 12, 1994.

This region has 120-175 metres water depth and consists of two licence areas. SOCAR operated Shallow Water Gunashli (SWG), in production since 1980, and BP operated Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG), in production since 1997.

Azeri - Chirag - Gunashli field has supplied approximately 3.3 billion barrels of oil to the world markets through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline.

Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) Oil Pipeline Project aims to deliver the oil produced in the Azeri - Chirag - Gunashli (ACG) project and other projects in the region to the buyers in the world markets. BTC starts from Baku, passes near Tbilisi and ends in Ceyhan. 1768 km long pipeline has an oil transmission capacity of 1 million barrels per day.

TPAO holds 6.53% share of BTC Co., which was established in 2002, in order to carry out the project construction and operate the pipeline afterwards.

The BTC Pipeline transported oil was first loaded to a tanker from the Ceyhan Terminal on June 3, 2006. As of the end of 2019, over 3.3 billion barrels of oil were supplied to the world markets through over 4,300 tankers from Ceyhan.

Shah Deniz area is the gas field with the highest daily production amount belonging to the Republic of Azerbaijan. Shah Deniz area is located on the Azerbaijani shores in the south west of the Caspian Sea. Gas reserve in this area is estimated to be 50-100 billion m3 (1.5-3 billion barrels of oil equivalent). This area is the starting point of the southern gas corridor and natural gas produced here is offered to a wide market including local use to European Union member countries.

TPAO’s partnership in Shah Deniz Project has started with the Exploration, Development and Production Sharing Agreement in 1996. TPAO is being represented in Shah Deniz Project via Turkish Petroleum Overseas Company (TPOC) a sub-company of TPAO.

The first discovery in the Shah Deniz field was made in 1999. On March 6, 2001, commercial gas and condensate discovery has been announced and an agreement has been signed between Turkey and Azerbaijan on March 12, 2001. Natural gas production has started in 2007 and products are being transported to Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey via the South Caucasus pipeline (SCP).

Investment decision for the second phase of the project was taken on December 17, 2013. Natural gas, which started to be produced on 30 June 2018, was transported to BOTAŞ at the Eskişehir outlet station with the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP).

First phase of the project has an annual maximum production capacity between 6-10 billion m3 of natural gas and this volume is sold to BOTAŞ. With the commissioning of the second phase, an additional 16 billion m3 natural gas production capacity has been added. 10 billion m3of this amount is planned to be sold to the European market through TANAP and TAP (Trans Adriatic Pipeline) pipelines and the remaining 6 billion m3to BOTAŞ. Two stage Project is expected to have a total annual production of 25 billion m3 of natural gas and 39 million barrels of condensate.

The largest share in the project belongs to the operator company. TPAO has become the second largest shareholder in 2014 with 19% which had started as 9% in 1996. TPAO’s total investment thru the project is estimated as 15 billion USD.

South Caucasus Natural Gas Pipeline Project (SCP) starts from the Sangachal terminal in Azerbaijan and aims to deliver the natural gas produced at the Shah Deniz field, Azerbaijan, Georgia to buyers in Turkey. SCP is 692 km long and uses the same route with Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline Project (BTC) to reach the Georgia-Turkey border.

Manager of the pipeline is the South Caucasus Natural Gas Pipeline Company (SCP Co.) and the first gas delivery took place on July 3, 2007. For the first phase of the project, the single compressor station in Sangachal Terminal was being used and the amount of natural gas it could annually carry was 9 billion m³. The final investment decision for SCP’s second stage was taken in December 2013. SCP expansion project (South Caucasus Pipeline Expansion - SCPX) has been started to meet the increasing capacity requirement and it is aimed to increase the transportation capacity to 24 billion m³. SCPX started operating on June 30, 2018 and with its completion by the end of 2020, a capacity of 24 billion m³ will be reached.

Total amount of natural gas transported via SCP in 2019 reaches to 15.3 billion m³. 6.02 billion m³ of which was delivered to BOTAŞ and 2.58 billion m³ to TANAP.
